Special Report:   17th CPC National Congress

China will start building a second, major natural gas pipeline at the end of the year or in early 2008 to transport fuel from its remote northwestern regions to the booming coast.

China is keen to boost use of the fuel to cut pollution, and it also wants to increase gas imports.

Vice Minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission, Chen Deming, was speaking at the 17th Party Congress on Tuesday. Chen said the gas line would take gas from resource-rich western regions -- like Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi province -- to the Pearl River Delta in southern China's Guangdong province.
