The Ministry of Finance said on Monday it will accelerate plans to impose fuel tax. The ministry said in a report that after the government begins to impose a tax on gasoline, diesel and kerosene, it will stop levying some administration fees such as road-maintaining fees.

The current reform scheme of fuel tax was drawn out in 2001. The ministry said it will greatly adjust the scheme to encourage conservation amid surging oil imports. It also said the introduction of the long-planned tax will lead to the rise of gasoline and kerosene prices. Thus it will still wait for appropriate timing.

Experts say only if the domestic oil prices are adjusted in terms of global price system, the government may consider imposing fuel tax.
