Susan Brownell

Susan Brownell is professor of anthropology at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. While studying Chinese at Peking University, she won a gold medal at the 1986 Chinese National College Games. She then studied for a year at Beijing Sport University and these experiences resulted in her first book, "Training the Body for China".

She was the translator of "He Zhenliang and Chinas Olympic Dream", the biography of China's member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Since 2000 she has been a member of the IOC's postgraduate grant selection committee. Her most recent book, "Beijing's Games: What the Olympics Mean to China" (2008), ranges from 19th-century Orientalism to Cold War politics to post-Cold War "China bashing".

In 2007-08 she is a Fulbright researcher at the Olympic Studies Centre, Beijing Sport University, researching the 2008 Olympic Games. Her essays are posted on the "Beijing Olympics" website of the U.S. embassy in China.

She has lifelong experience in sports, beginning with equestrian events at the age of two, followed by a career as a nationally ranked U.S. track and field athlete (heptathlon), and national medals in adult figure skating.

She was president of the St. Louis Skating Club and a member of the organizing committee of the 2006 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Louis.
