190 torchbearers took part in the relay in Linyi, including former athletes and model workers. Earlier, the flame visited Olympic co-host city, Qingdao.

The relay in Qingdao covered 14.5 kilometers and involved 259 torchbearers. The first runner was Zhang Xiaodong, a windsurfing world champion and silver medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The mayor of Qingdao, Xia Geng, ended the torch relay by lighting the cauldron at the beach.

At one point during the relay, the flame was carried for a kilometer aboard sailboats, which are the focus of Olympic competition in Qingdao.
