Qingdao holds emergency drill for Olympics

Emergency and security drills continue in Qingdao in east China which will host Olympic sailing events in August. The coastal city has set up an integrated land and sea security system to make sure nothing goes wrong.

An emergency drill in Qingdao. A chemical leak from tanker threatens the safety to residents in the area. After the alert is sounded, police, fire fighters and environmental agents, rush to the site. After 40 minutes of joint action, they bring the situation under control.

This is one of many exercises held in Qingdao over last few months to test security systems and coordination between different departments.

Zhao Chunguang, director of Qingdao Public Security Bureau, said, "The competition venues in Qingdao were built to meet security requirements. And we've set up an integrated security network on the water around the Olympic sailing center."

Hundreds of cameras have been set up in and around the sailing center to monitor the entire area. Advanced security systems include sonar to monitor the situation underwater. And frogmen can stay underwater for 45 minutes at a depth of 38 meters.

ON the sea, 44 square kilometers have been divided into different zones with varying levels of security. Border control and maritime affairs departments patrol the area during the Olympics.
