A series of temporary new measures in Beijing are aimed at cleaning up the capital's air for the Olympics.

Construction will be stopped and heavy industry will be shut down. All digging and pouring of concrete at construction sites will be suspended from July 20 to September 20, according to the city's Environmental Protection Bureau.

Nineteen heavy-polluting companies also have been told to cut their emissions in the same period by a further 30 percent.
