The Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress has begun a new session. A review of eight draft laws and amendments will top the agenda of the five-day session.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over Wednesday's plenary meeting. Lawmakers are expected to vote on four bills in the coming days: a draft law on urban and rural planning, an amendment to the Civil Procedure Law, a revised edition of the Law on Attorneys and a draft revision of the Law on Energy Saving.

The committee will also be reviewing other draft laws -- including an Administrative Mandatory Law. This would be China's first law aimed at regulating government administration and preventing abuses of power.

Lawmakers are also expected to review an amendment on the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.
