WHO approves rescue work in Sri Lanka

Officials of the World Health Organization have given a positive assessment for Sri Lanka, saying the country is moving out of the initial, acute phase of the tsunami disaster.

But Doctor Samlee Plianbangchang, the regional director for the organization in South East Asia, also warned that water bourne diseases, especially malaria and dengue fever, still pose a significant risk in some parts of the island nation. The WHO and related Sri Lankan authorities say they are well prepared for emergencies.
