Chinese people give US$12 mln

The Red Cross Society of China says it has received more than 100 million yuan, or about 12 million US dollars, in donations from ordinary Chinese people wanting to help tsunami victims. And the China Development Bank has donated 1.8 million US dollars. That's the largest sum of money so far, that any Chinese institution has donated to the Red Cross Society of China for tsunami aid.

The Red Cross says a couple who refused to give their names made the largest contribution of 5 million yuan on Friday.

They said the first 2 million US dollars collected had been given to Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Maldives.

Additional relief materials including medicine, pure water and clothes will be airlifted to the disaster-hit countries soon.

China's biggest bank, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, has donated 1 million yuan via the Red Cross.

The bank, at which the Red Cross has opened a special account for donations, has promised to go all out to provide people making donations with sound, prompt service.

The China Development Bank has donated 1.8 million US dollars to the tsunami-hit countries. This is the largest sum of money to come from a Chinese institution so far.

The President of the bank, Chen Yuan, announced the donation at a special ceremony in Beijing on Saturday. Chen said the donation will breakdown to 600,000 dollars for Indonesia, 500,000 dollars for Sri Lanka, 400,000 for Thailand and 300,000 for the Maldives.
