Ahead of Thursday's vote, security remains a major issue in Afghanistan. There are fears that election tension could boil over into street violence if presidential losers allege massive fraud.

Meanwhile, an Afghan official says the Taliban have threatened to attack polling centers in the key southern province of Kandahar a warning likely to have a chilling effect on potential voters. Militants have staged a series of attacks in the run-up to the vote.

These have included a suicide car bombing on Saturday near NATO headquarters in Kabul that killed seven people and wounded nearly 100.

In light of this, more than 100-thousand international troops and 175-thousand Afghan forces have been deployed to provide security.

Hanif Atmar, Afghan Interior Minister, said, "Such terrorist attacks will not break the resolve of our nation.

They will go to polling stations and they will vote for the person of their choice and they will show again and demonstrate their remarkable courage and resilience."
