Chinese President Hu Jintao has convened a meeting of the Polit Bureau Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee to discuss issues relating to the Xinjiang riot.

On Wednesday night, the leaders told relevant authorities to "isolate and crack down on the tiny few" and "unify and educate the majority." The meeting pointed out that the Urumqi riot was deeply political and a cruel criminal incident, plotted by overseas separatism, terrorism and extremism. The meeting stressed that stability in Xinjiang is the "most important and pressing task".

It emphasized that social stability should be encouraged at every workplace and to every person.

The meeting stressed that all ethnic groups should be united. It called on the party committee and government at all levels to promote political insight. The meeting also vowed "severe punishment" for culprits in accordance with the law.
