President Hu Jintao has met with the Speaker of United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Hu Jintao said China-US relations have seen their ups and downs after diplomatic ties were established 30 years ago.
But thanks to the efforts made by the two countries, he said bilateral ties have developed quickly.
Mentioning his meeting with his US counterpart, Barack Obama, in London last month, Hu said the two sides reached common understanding on the direction that China-US ties should take in the 21st century.
Hu Jintao said China is willing to make joint efforts with the US to develop overall cooperation.
Pelosi said she hopes her visit can deepen mutual understanding between the two sides. She also hoped it would boost policy dialogue and practical cooperation between the two countries in areas such as energy, environment and climate change. Premier Wen Jiabao also met with Pelosi on Wednesday.
