General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, Hu Jintao, held talks on cross-strait relations with Kuomintang Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung in Beijing on Tuesday afternoon.

This is the third meeting between Hu Jintao and Wu Poh-hsiung in less than a year.

After reviewing the progress made, the two leaders agreed to continue to promote the development of cross-Strait ties in various fields.

Hu Jintao proposed an increase in mutual political trust to push forward a series of complex issues between the two sides. But he says it's essential they stick to the One-China principle.

Hu Jintao also said the mainland will continue to focus on economic cooperation with Taiwan. He said their top task is to combat the global economic downturn together. He offered to start talks on a cross-Strait economic cooperation agreement in the second half of this year. Hu Jintao said such an agreement should benefit economic development on both sides, improve people's welfare and contribute to a cooperative mechanism that fits the cross-Strait reality.

Another focus will be expanding cultural and educational exchanges. Hu Jintaotao says such exchanges have great demand and potential. And he added more work needs to be done on cultural exchanges to promote China's traditional civilization with strengthened spiritual ties.
