President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the country has successfully launched an advanced surface-to-surface missile with a range of about 2-thousand kilometers.

Ahmadinejad made the announcement during a visit to the northern Iranian province of Semnan, where the Sejil-2 missile was launched.

The solid-fuel surface-to-surface missile is a new version of the Sajji-l missile. That's the rocket that Iran said it had successfully tested late last year, with a similar range.

Iran says the Sejil-2 missile has been manufactured only for defensive purposes of its territory. And also to strengthen peace and stability in the region.
