To celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year in 2008, Up-Close is preparing a special program - part of a special series on the 30th Anniversary of China's Opening-up.

Chinese Lunar New Year is the most important festival for the Chinese people, and it is marked by families getting together and having a delicious meal on Chinese New Year's Eve. Traditionally, this is perhaps one of the most important meals of the year. But in the 1970s and 80s, the celebration was much more simple, due to the lack of diverse food types.

Since the implementation of China's opening-up policy in the late 1970s, China has seen incomes and living standards rise. In the food sector, China implemented the "basket project" in 1987. See those changes… From only orange juice available before 1978 to over 100 soft drinks for sale right now… From very few fresh tomatoes available, except homemade tomato sauce, to tremendous diversity in vegetables on sale now…
