2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between China and African countries. "Up-Close" invited 16 African ambassadors'wives to our studio to share their lives and experiences in China.

As President, former President and Vice-President of the Group of African Ambassadors'Spouses, known as GASS, wife of Zimbabwean Ambassador Monica Mutsvangwa, wife of Nigerian Ambassador Yemisi Coker, and wife of Morroccan Ambassador Mina Ahid Cherti, told the audience what they have accomplished as "informal diplomats". Lightheartedly, they said they have put their feet much more on the map of China than their husbands. They joked that one of their husbands said that while they are Ambassadors to Beijing, the Ambassadors'wives are Ambassadors to China. Though a joke, these Ambassadors'wives have contributed a lot to further develop Sino-Africa relations through cultural communication and understanding, rather than serious meetings.

As a celebration of Sino-Africa relations, the goal of this program was to promote understanding of the relationship between these two regions. The Chinese and African studio audience participated in a quiz about basic knowledge of Africa and Sino-African relations. Viewers also have an opportunity to take a look at fascinating African culture and customs, especially their beautiful costumes, and well-known dances.
