Since he first came to Asia as part of the military, John Thomson has been fascinated with the East. Learning Chinese only further strengthened his interest, specifically in China. Today, he is one of the few Americans who has witnessed and participated in many of modern China’s most important events in recent history.
In China, he is better known as Tang Zhanxi than John Charles Thomson. Ever since he decided to learn Chinese, John´s life has been destined to be connected with China. As a diplomat, he witnessed many "firsts" in Sino-US history. Although he is no longer a diplomat, he has never ceased his efforts as an envoy, -- that is to help promote cultural communication between the two countries.
