The palaces and temples in Wudang contain Taoist buildings from as early as the 7th century. Today, the best- preserved temple in Wudang is Zixiao Gong. The purple cloud Palace built in the 15th century.
Considered to be a deep-rooted philosophy waved into every fabric of Chinese Culture, Taoism is also venerated, as China's only indigenous ancient religion.
In 14th century, Taoism prospered when emperor and royal family came to wudang regularly as pious believers. Judging by the grand scale, the elegant costume and Majestic music of a sacrifice ceremony of Wudang tradition, it is easy to imagine Wudang's hay day when being the royal family temple.
Since wudang is believed holding the secret to enlightenment and even immortality, in ancient time, many pious believers were willing to commit years to pay pilgrimage here. To finish such a journey is considered to be the perfect test of ones devotion and spiritual strength.
By the time when you reach Chaotian gong, 'Earth Palace facing Heaven', it means you have accomplished half way through and there are bonus for you climbing this far.
Most present architecture seen today in wudang was built simultaneously with the Forbidden City in Beijing in 14th century, at almost same cost of labor and money!
Southern Crag's architecture is also described as ' Forbidden City hang on the cliff'. The complex exemplifies China's architectural achievement over Yung, Ming and Qing, three dynasties, over 1000 years.
The 'parents hall' on 'southern crag' was built in honor of parents of the Taoist god- zhenwu. The mother figure sculptures were from Yuan dynasty, more than 600 years ago. In front of these amiable faces, few filial children have the heart to pass by without a bow, praying for parents' health and longevity.
To most Chinese kids, Fantasy martial art world has always more appeal than that of Star war sor Harry Potter would ever has. You got some pictures by watching kunfu movies. In wudang, I saw my fantasy world play alive!
As royal family temple, wudang Taoist priests shouldered the pressure of protecting the emperor and royal family during their visits, that was one of the reasons Wudang martial art flourished during Ming Dynasty.
Initially built in 1416, today's Taihe temple only has the Main hall stayed intact. Its back gate was the only access to the golden peak ringed by a rampart, meant to reserve the golden hall only for the royal family and Taoist priests at that time.
The entire golden hall is made of solid copper gilded with gold and weighs about 90 tons! It was made in Beijing first and then transported all the way here.
Religious Taoism values mental wellbeing, longevity, even takes immortality as the ultimate pursuing goal. But perhaps nothing can ultimately satisfy human being!
