China defeated another badminton powerhouse Indonesia in their last group match on Thursday night. With the victory, China top Group B at the world mixed team championships.
In the first men's doubles competition, the Chinese pairing of Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng went on a 7-0 run in the first set and won it 21-10. Their opponents Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan then gained their composure and made the most of their speed to take the second 21-19. The Chinese pair soon adjusted themselves though and scored the first point for team China with a 21-10 victory in the third set.
Wang Yihan took on Maria Kristin Yulianti in the following women's singles match. Wang fought back from one set down to beat her opponent, and China led the tie at 2-0.
The next match saw Olympic champion Lin Dan face Simon Santoso. Most people thought Lin Dan would win the match with ease, but Santoso surprised them all by taking the first set 21-13, which was also the first set dropped by Lin in the tournament. But to the delight of the home crowd, Lin Dan managed to find his form and win the following two sets 21-14, 21-11. The 2-1 win helped China secure top place in Group B. China will meet Malaysia in the semifinals.
