Ding was in good form after beating compatriot Liang Wenbo in the first round. The second round match is a best of 25 frames format and was split into three sessions over two days. Ding and Hendry were tied at 4-4 after the first session and it was not coincidental that the second session ended with 8-all. It all came down to the final session of a possible 9 frames.
The 7-time world champion Hendry gained the upper hand over Ding in the opening frames. Ding missed a ball in the 18th frame and Hendry took his opportunity to score a break of 140 points, tying the highest mark at the tournament so far. Ding kept making unforced errors as he missed this red ball. Hendry then collected 49 points to reach match frame at 12-9.
