It was only Murray's second singles match after returning from an illness that forced him out of the Dubai open, and it looks like he recovered very well. The fourth-seeded Briton stepped up a gear from his first match, hitting six aces to set up a clash with either Spanish 15th seed Tommy Robredo or 19th seed Marin Cilic of Croatia. Andy Murray broke in the first game before a brief lapse of concentration allowed Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu to break back for 3-3. The Scottish talent went on to a 6-3, 6-2 win over his opponent.

On the women's side, number 10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland faced the 30th seed Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada. The large gap in world rankings between the two showed quite obviously at times, with the Canadian making a number of unforced errors. Her Polish opponent took full advantage, and went on to win 6-1, 6-4 for a place in the last 16.
