Chinese swimmer Liu Zige's overwhelming victory in the women's 200-meter butterfly has made her parents, coaches and hometown all proud.

For people in the northeastern city of Benxi, where Liu Zige was born, Thursday was a day full of anticipation.

Her parents, neighbors and friends gathered in the community center to watch Liu's event live.

Most were expecting a medal, but Liu Zige stunned them by winning gold and setting a world record.

The hometown crowd went wild when the champion was announced. They celebrated in traditional Chinese style, with fireworks.

Liu's parents are certainly the proudest of all.
