A Uefa jury of nine experienced football technicians, including ex-Real Madrid striker Emilio Butragueno and former France coach Gerard Houllier, made the selection aided by an online fans' vote. The announcement came from Uefa Technical Director Andy Roxburgh.

Andy Boxbrugh, UEFA Technical Director said "The Castrol player of the tournament is Xavi from Spain. We have chosen him because we think he epitomizes the Spanish style of play. He was extremely influential in the whole possession, passing and penetrating kind of game that Spain played."
