Spain have yet to lose in the tournament and beat a negative Italian team on penalties in the quarter-finals to secure their first semi-final appearance since 1984. They have already beaten Russia 4-1 in Group D, but the Russian team have changed beyond recognition since that defeat, with returning playmaker Andrei Arshavin the chief contributor. But head coach Luis Aragones is confident in his team.
Luis Aragones, Spain coach, said, "Russia has shown they are the best national team so far, the best of all those teams that have played until now, but I fully trust my team and I am sure we are going to win. "
Russia hold training session ahead of semi-final
Meanwhile, surprise package Russia held one final training session ahead of their match. Clearly lacking in major match experience, the Russian team has come a long way in this tournament after being thrashed 4-1 in their opening match by Spain. Guus Hiddink's best previous experience has been reaching the semifinals of the world cup and the Dutchman hopes this Russian team can progress even further.

Guus Hiddink, Russia coach, said, "The other teams Australia, Korea and now Russia they have come from more far away. So when they can come on the edge of the final it's different. They like to play...this team likes to play football. And if we can play football what we like to play and if through this concept we come into the final it's even...ya..its very luxurious position for the team and then also for me. You have to also consider the level, starting level of the teams as well."
