Special Report: 2008 European ChampionshipsBERN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- With another classy performance, the Netherlands beat France 4-1 to sail into last eight as the winners of the Group of Death, with one round of competitions still to go.
As world champions Italy were held to a 1-1 draw by Romania, the Netherlands have already ensured the top position in Group C regardless the results of the last round matches to be played on June 17.
The Netherlands, who beat Italy in their first match at Euro 2008, continued their superb form and dominated the first 30 minutes of the first half.
Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring at the 9th minute when he headed in a corner from close range.
Robin van Persie, who came onto the pitch in the second half, made it 2-0 for the Netherlands when he picked up an Arjen Robben's crossfield pass and beat the French goalie Gregory Coupet with a fierce shot.
Robben, who made a quick recovery from groin problem, was called onto the pitch after interval. He put himself on the scorers' list at the 72nd mark as he blasted the ball into the net from the acutest angel.
The French team only managed a consolation goal through Thierry Henry at the 71st minute.
The Netherlands now lead the group with 6 points. Romania are in the second position with 2 points after forcing Italy to a 1-1 draw. Italy and France are joint third with one point each.
The last round matches of Group C will be played on June 17 with the Netherlands playing Romania and Italy taking on France.
Should Romania repeat their feat in the qualifying tournament by beating the Netherlands again on June 17, then Italy and France, the World Cup champions and runners-up, will all be eliminated in group stage.
