Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

(BEIJING, Dec. 7) -- The Executive Board of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) held its 74th meeting on Thursday.

The meeting heard a report on the design scheme of the pictograms of the sports for the Beijing Paralympic Games. The pictograms are a major program to develop the basic images of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, which clearly reflects the contents and characters of the sports, thus playing an important role in their recognition and publicity.

The design of pictograms for the Beijing Paralympic Games was launched in May 2006. The preliminary design and development work has been completed, following stages of research and planning, design and creation as well appraisal and examination.

In accordance with the composition of the sports for the Beijing Paralympic Games, pictograms for 20 sports are needed. They are: archery,athletics, cycling,equestrian,football 7-a-Side, judo, sailing, swimming, table tennis, Boccia, football 5-a-Side, goalball, powerlifting, shooting, volleyball (sitting), wheelchair Basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair tennis and rowing.

The meeting noted that the design scheme accurately embodies all the sports, fully expresses the Olympic spirit, Chinese cultural characteristics and the concepts of the Beijing Paralympic Games. The pictograms are coordinative and integrative with the defined visual images of the emblem and color system of Beijing Paralympic Games and can meet the needs of various communication means including TV broadcast, internet, print and demonstration.

The meeting also heard reports on the selection of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games torchbearers, work scheme of overseas torch relay and press communication strategy on torch relay, and studied the outline of the general insurance scheme for BOCOG.

The meeting was chaired by BOCOG President Liu Qi, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and secretary of Beijing Municipal CPC Committee.

Present at the meeting was also Chen Zhili, state councilor and BOCOG first vice president.
