Special Report: 2008 Beijing Olympics
Construction is in full swing for the Beijing Olympic Venues. The main structures of all the venues have already taken shape. So far, 2006 has been a successful year of preparation work for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The National Stadium has taken full structure, standing spectacularly in its Bird's Nest architecture. The breathtaking venue will look even more stunning with silver being decorated onto the steel twigs.
With the successful welding of the main steel structure in August, the removal of the supporting steel beams in September and the hoisting project of the steel structure in November, construction work on the National Stadium, or the Bird's Nest, is now shifting to the installation of membranes, fit-ups and decorations.
Zhang Hengli, deputy general manager of national stadium Co. Ltd. said,
"The interior work needs great care and efforts. It must match well with the exterior structure. Green materials will also be used inside the stadium."
Next to the Bird's Nest stands the National Aquatics Center, which is starting to look breathtaking with blue ETFE cushions covering most of the structure.
The membrane installation is progressing smoothly and will be completed by the end of this year. The interior work will begin early next year.
According to BOCOG and the Beijing Olympic Project Construction Department, the number of Olympic venues and related projects under construction has reached 45, 25 of which are competition venues. All projects will be completed by the end of 2007.
