At Du Jiang Yan, thousands of residents can be seen camping out in temporary shelters in parks, streets and anywhere practical. This was the closest city to the epicenter of the earthquake and over 100 buildings collapsed and 90% of the buildings left standing have been deemed too dangerous to return to.

The tents you see by the side of the road were there on the 16th of may when we first arrived, but couple of days later they had been moved to a better location. The people living here were happy to chat with me about their experiences.

Volunteers from neighboring areas drove in to provide their less fortunate neighbors food and offer whatever help they could.

This stadium has been transformed into the largest shelter in the Mianyang municipality for earthquake related victims. Notice boards can be seen where family member looking for missing loved ones have placed notices asking for any information.

On the day arrived the stadium was already housing over 5000 people. Most of the victims here came from Beichuan, the worst hit town which was completely destroyed.

The facilities at the sports center combined with its spacious layout allowed it to be transformed effectively into an immediate shelter.

To help victims lives return back to normal and also help them get in touch with missing relatives, free phone charging and calls have been provided in addition to the basic essentials such as food and water.

After such a traumatic experience it is essential the children they are in a safe and stable environment as the center now appears to be, unlike a few days earlier as one volunteer tells kids, shadow in their mind, volunteer get injured.

A special area at the sports stadium has been set for orphans and other children that are victims of the earthquake. It’s an effort to help meet their emotional requirements.

Foreign aid workers were also at the scene.

Directly outside the stadium, on a ground about the size of 3 football grounds, were hundreds of tents housing the people affected by the earthquake. The people were calmly adapting to their new cirumstances.

Volunteers regularly visit every tent distributing one bottle of water to each person,

At the same time, at a Dujiangyan highschool which was severely damaged by the earthquake, a special memorial for the victims was held.

In this school, about 280 students and teachers combined were killed with 11 still missing when a main building collapsed on top of them during class. Those that survived had trouble dealing with the reality of their loss.

So things could get back to normal They resumed class on may 19 in temporary classrooms. And of all the earthquake effected schools it was one of the earliest to resume class following the earthquake.

At a primary school in Dujianyan, there were not any mortalities among the students, however some of the children did lost their parents and other family members, they resumed class on may the 17th in makeshift class room set up in the playground beside the school.

Life for these kids is starting to return to normal.
