China and the US are preparing for their first "Strategic and Economic Dialogue" on Monday. The two-day high-level talks in Washington will focus on a range of topics, from the global financial crisis to climate change, to security issues such as the nuclear standoff with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Kenneth Lieberthal, Brookings Institution, said, "There is one place where we have really failed in our relationship over the last thirty years and that is over the course of three decades since we established diplomatic relations we have not developed mutual trust in the long term intentions of each of us toward the other."

US President Richard Nixon made history in 1972 when he visited China. This paved the way for the two nations to establish normalized ties in 1979.

Now some 30 years later, the Obama Administration is preparing to host the China-US strategic and Economic Dialogue. Both nations still have much work to do.
