China will delay the mandatory installation of the controversial "Green Dam-Youth Escort" filtering software on new computers. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology says the postponement is necessary because some computer producers say they need more time to complete the massive installation process.

Previously, all computers produced or sold in China were scheduled to be installed with the software after July 1. The Green Dam software was designed to safeguard minors by blocking access to pornographic and violent content on the Internet.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is continuing to provide free downloads of the software. On July 1st, it also began equipping schools and computers in Internet bars.

The ministry says the filtering software will not collect any information about users or their online activities.

The ministry also says the filtering software will serve the "public good" and is in line with regulations set by the World Trade Organization.
