Astronomers study the radiation of celestial bodies to learn their chemical composition, density, atmosphere and magnetism.

LAMOST is designed to help scientists to scan more celestial bodies.

Su Dingqiang, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, "China obtains the most advanced active optics theory with LAMOST. It puts us past Europe and the US, the highest level of the theory in the world. It also lays a foundation for inventing bigger telescopes."

LAMOST replaces the American Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and becomes the most powerful spectra-collecting optical telescope.

Su said, "Sloan has collected a lot of important astronomical data. During the past two years, the data from Sloan was the most frequently used by scientists. But talking about the ability of scanning spectra, our LAMOST is better than Sloan. So it can record more astronomical data."

Carrying astronomers' dream of fully understanding the universe, LAMOST will definitely help add knowledge to mankind's quest to know more about the cosmos.
