Historically, Venice has always had a special character, going all the way back to its inception. The reason is, its unique location, straddling the islands and lagoons at the head of the Adriatic Sea.


These islands were settled in the fifth century A.D. by refugees fleeing the Hun and German invaders. Well, Venice’s fate has always been bound up inextricably with the sea. It’s from the sea that the city has long drawn its sustenance, in the form of trade.
