Mount Vesuvius in Italy is one of the most famous active volcanoes in the world. In 79 AD, a major eruption by Mount Vesuvius wiped out an entire city at its foot, in a matter of moments.
That city was, of course, Pompeii, a prosperous place where civilization and culture flourished. For almost two thousand years Pompeii lay undisturbed beneath heaps of ash and cinders.
