Naples is known around the world as the centre of Italian opera. Towards the end of the 16th century, a new kind of performing art was created in the city of Florence in northern Italy. It was an early form of opera.

Within 100 years, it was dominating the stages of Rome and Venice, becoming the most popular form of entertainment for aristocrats and common people alike. In the late 17th century, a new school of opera developed in Naples, which would bring about fundamental changes to Italian opera.
