South Korea was the second Asian country, after Japan in 1964, to host the Summer Olympics. That was in 1988. The Seoul Games featured numerous exceptional performances. Table tennis made its first appearance at an Olympics, and tennis returned as a medal sport after an absence of 64 years. Korea is a country of great tradition and has a rich culture. Taekwondo, a modern martial art, is a national sport in South Korea. It’s characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks. The man who invented Taekwondo was a general in the South Korean army.

Taekwondo today is one of the world’s most popular martial arts. There are believed to be more than 6 million practitioners around the world. In 2000, taekwondo formally became an Olympic sport.
