Back in 1976, the Canadian city of Montreal hosted the Olympic Games. In today’s programme, we’ll hear all about the sport that is a national obsession across Canada – ice hockey. The sport of ice hockey originated in Canada around the middle of the 19th century, when a game played on ice became popular in the area around Kingston, Ontario. Well, the game quickly spread. In 1885, a league was established in Kingston. In 1917, the National Hockey league was founded, made up of five Canadian teams.

Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest players ice hockey has ever seen, set 61 NHL records in his 20-year career. When Gretzky announced his retirement, the sports media lamented that a great era in professional ice hockey, had come to an end.
