It was always the dream of Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, for the Games to be held in Rome. He was desperate for the Olympics to be associated with the city of art and philosophy. In 1960, his wish finally came true. Italy has, over the centuries, hosted many great cultures.

Latterly, it was the birthplace of the Renaissance. As for Rome, known as the Eternal City, it has for two thousand years been at the heart of Western civilization. Rome, and Italy as a whole, were home to one of the world's greatest ancient civilizations; they are steeped in history; they are a treasure-house of art and architecture.

Since ancient times, sport has also been an important part of Roman and Italian life. Today, we’ll hear not about chariot races or football, but two lesser known sports; the half marathon and the athletic dance.

Following the professional runners come the amateurs. But while the race for the professionals is a genuine competition, for the amateurs, it’s more a matter of fun; a chance to enjoy – and be a part of – the carnival atmosphere.
