Kunqu Opera can trace its origins back to the Ming Dynasty about six hundred years ago, and a small town south of the Yangtze, called Kunshan. Two hundred years later, Kunqu entered its golden age, with the staging of Tang Xianzu’s masterpiece ‘The Peony Pavilion’.

And a further two hundred years after that, Chinese opera entered an age in which different genres merged. However, the new forms of opera were, in reality, nurtured by Kunqu. Foremost among these new opera forms, was Peking Opera.
