Every period of history has its own fashions and tastes in clothing, music and so on. During the Ming Dynasty, around the mid-16th century, it was fashionable among the intelligentsia to enjoy Kunqu Opera.

It wasn’t just that they watched performances – they even wrote their own Kunqu Opera pieces. There were even retired scholar-officials who established their own Kunqu Opera troupes. One piece that was often performed by these family troupes was “The Story of Xi Shi and Fan Li”.
