In these days of mass communication and international air travel, there are few places in the world that we can describe as mysterious. But still there is Tibet – the Roof of the World – whose inaccessibility has played a large part in earning its reputation for mystery. Tibet boasts stunning scenery of azure skies, snow-capped peaks, vast expanses of grassland and – here and there – brightly-colored prayer flags. It’s a landscape that few people have ever seen at first hand; and yet it still exerts a powerful hold on the imagination of the world.
