In classical novels and traditional story-telling, a great practitioner of the martial arts is often described as a ‘master of 18 weapons’. These 18 weapons include such things as the bow and arrow, dagger, sword and spear – to name just a few. To put all this into some historical perspective, evidence has been found suggesting that bows and arrows were the earliest weapons used in warfare in China – and that was during the Stone Age. They, like several other fighting weapons that developed later, were originally used in hunting and farming. The weapons they used were very primitive. Some have disappeared from use over the centuries, while others have been developed and have assumed more sophisticated – and deadly – forms.
