Right back in the earliest days of human civilization, stone was vital to our ancient ancestors, since they made their tools and weapons from it. This was true in China, just as it was in the rest of the world. Then, around four thousand years ago, metals were discovered, from which far more advanced tools and weapons could be made. But that didn’t mean the human interest in stone suddenly vanished, because by this time people were producing stone inscriptions and sculptures. The works that have survived until today provide a priceless insight into the life and art of past civilizations.
