China has a wide variety of arts and crafts with exquisite workmanship. Special arts and crafts precious or special materials such as ivory, horn, bamboo and wood, and undergo elaborate designing and processing. The carving on ivory, known as “White Gold”, has a long tradition in China. Due to the similar properties shared by rhinoceros horn of ivory, it’s hardly surprising that horn carving also developed as an art. In Chinese tradition, bamboo is the symbol of honesty and modesty, and wood is one of the five elements that make up the natural world. So the investigation of the art of bamboo and wood carving will lead us to explore broader areas of Chinese civilization and tradition.
