Of the numerous art forms for which China is famous, there is only one that can claim to have been around for all of the past forty-five centuries. And that’s porcelain. Porcelain is unique in another sense, too; in its most basic form – fired clay – it has served the needs, both practical and aesthetic, of virtually every civilization the Earth has ever known. But it’s China that can claim the world's longest – and probably also the most sophisticated – porcelain-making tradition. It’s a tradition that is based on technical innovation, artistic refinement, aesthetic diversity and global impact.
