For thousands of years, jade has played a prominent role in Chinese culture. In fact, the medals handed out at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will all have a piece of jade embedded in their reverse side. Amazingly, it was as early as seven thousand years ago that our ancient ancestors first started fashioning decorative items out of some strangely-coloured stones they found. This was the beginning of Chinese jade culture. With time jade became a symbol of power, wealth and good fortune. Even today, jade retains a certain air of mystique. Only on CCTV International.
