Six hundred years ago, a community of Huizhou merchants emerged from southern China, who would dominate the country's trade for three centuries. Huizhou is in a mountainous area of Anhui Province, where people have always struggled to eke out an existence from the poor soil. In fact, it was said that the area could produce enough grain to support the local population for only three months of the year.
Eventually, people started leaving the mountains of Huizhou for the cities, where they discovered a talent for doing business. The Huizhou merchants were known as much for their love of learning as they were for their extensive business interests, ranging from tea, ink and brushes, and paper, to timber, salt and pawn-broking. New Frontiers takes you to the home of the Huizhou merchants, to discover how scholarship contributed to a remarkable business success story. Only on CCTV International
