The tree leaves wither and fall. Deck leads his mates and children down from the trees and onto the ground with the other monkeys. The dry yellow leaves are no longer edible. So they must search among the fallen leaves for fruit to eat. .

But the fallen fruit is scarce, and the families must fight over food. The battle is fierce. Deck strikes out violently, and finally his tyranny provokes resistance from other members of the colony.

Parted-Hair decides this is his moment. He gathers together a group of male monkeys as his allies.

Deck has lost the colony’s support. He is now surrounded by his enemies. Parted-Hair seizes the chance and deals the fatal blow.

During the short battle, Deck is badly bitten on his left leg.

Winter arrives, bringing a heavy fall of snow.

The animals of the forest have their own ways of defending against the cold. The giant pandas have thick fur and plenty of subcutaneous fat.

Deck has been abandoned by Parted-Hair and the rest of the colony. Old and weak now, with the wound in his leg still troubling him, he loses the strength to fight.

In the morning after the snow, the temperature has fallen to minus 10. The monkeys huddle together for warmth. Those who stray outside the group find survival extremely difficult.

Yuanyuan takes Little Yuan looking for food on the snow-covered ground. For monkeys, during the winter grass roots and tree bark are the only food available to fill their stomachs.

Yuanyuan can no longer produce milk, so Little Yuan must eat tree bark. Deck watches them. But now, the situation is entirely different.

Parted-Hair quickly subdues the other golden monkeys. He is even more despotic than his predecessor, Deck.

Most of the creatures living in mountainous areas will migrate into the forest with the changes of climate. It’s getting colder and colder, and led by Parted-Hair, the monkeys prepare to leave the valley and cross the ridge, to spend the winter lower down the mountains. When the spring comes next year and the weather is warmer, they will return.
