Juan Qin Zhai, the most luxurious garden in the Forbidden City
Juan Qin Zhai was built by Qing Dynasty emperor Qianlong as a retirement retreat. Workers rebuild the Juan Qin Zai Garden in the northwest district of the Forbidden City. It was burned down in 1923 by eunuchs who wanted to hide evidence of jewelry theft from Pu Yi, the last emperor of China. Restorers use new materials but incorporate traditional construction methods. It will open to the public in the coming years.
The Potala Palace
At the very tip of the Red Hill in Lhasa, at an altitude of 3,700 metres, stands the symbol of Tibet 鈥 the Potala Palace. The palace was built in the 7th century by the greatest monarch in Tibetan history, King Songtsan Gampo.
Huizhou
Huizhou, in southeast China, was an area renowned for maintaining some of the country鈥檚 most archaic customs. Ancestral temples were the focal point of important family events and family genealogies were the most treasured possessions.
