Two thousand and nine marks 50 years since the democratic reform in Tibet. In accordance with a decision by the Tibetan People’s Congress, March the 28th will be observed as Serfs’ Emancipation Day – when over a million Tibetan serfs were given their freedom.

The French government has declared May the 10th as the day for remembering the abolition of slavery.
In the English city of Liverpool, which was a major port used by slave traders, activities were held in 2007 to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.
To review history is often to sound an alarm for the future. The era of slavery was one of the darkest periods in human history. People were deprived of their basic human rights; natural human decency was destroyed; and human culture and thought were shackled. The pain slavery inflicted on people around the world is still being felt today.
