Later, based on that, Hu Jintao raised some other thoughts. They were called “One Central Task; Two Big Affairs; Three Guarantees”. Symbolically, that meant that economic construction was the central task. The economy and stability were the two big affairs. And also the guarantee of improvement in Tibet Autonomous Region society; Tibet Autonomous Region safety as well as an increase in the standard of living in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Later these thoughts became the guidelines for the new era of development in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

By the end of the 1980s – even though there was still some harassment from the Dalai group -- the Tibet Autonomous Region rapidly recovered under the guidelines. And religious, as well as ethnical developments were on the right path. This is the home of Ngawang Danba in Doilung Deqen County in Lhasa. Whenever guests visit, the hostess Pasang will show them a quartz clock -- which is very meaningful to her.

In July 1990, Chairman Jiang Zemin visited the Tibet Autonomous Region. He wanted to investigate how the Tibet Autonomous Region was developing in the market economy society.

He visited Ngawang Danba’s home, chatted with her family – and before he left… presented her with a quartz clock as a souvenir. Although that was nearly 20 years ago, Pasang still treasures the quartz clock. She says it is the best gift she has ever received.
